Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer sat down with Late Kick’s Josh Pate, Taking A New Move…
Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer spoke with Late Kick’s Josh Pate this week, providing an update on the football program’s status following its first scrimmage of spring practice. DeBoer said he was “really pleased” with the first scrimmage, but he recognized areas of weakness at the offensive line and defensive back and intends to remedy them during the second transfer portal window.
“There are a couple of position groups that we are just short at: Defensive backfield and offensive line,” DeBoer said in a statement. “Those figures you generally have aren’t where they should be or where we want them to be. We have to be ready there. You never hit perfectly on the targets you set, but we need to go a little closer than we are right now.”
DeBoer also discussed his lack of SEC recruiting expertise and how his staff is dragging him down the learning curve. He also spoke about his first three months in Tuscaloosa and how his approach varies from that of his predecessor, Nick Saban.
“The first scrimmage went well. The first lesson was on penalties. That only shows how many guys are still thinking. It’s been improved this week. I was very happy with the first scrimmage. Both sides of the ball had their moments. Jalen Milroe possesses a distinct talent set. He’s a dual threat who can perform a variety of things with his legs. He has a really good arm, is still learning the offense, and is becoming more comfortable. There are several excellent quarterbacks in that room. All four of our men have taken reps, which explains why they’re here. They provide amazing value. You’d be very comfortable with any of them out there.
“Time has flown past. It’s hard to believe it’s already the first of April. We arrived in the middle of January. Your first 30-60 days will differ depending on whether you are employed in December or the middle of January. Hiring employees and keeping the roster intact was a priority. Around 30-40 days in, I had a solid understanding of where we were and had settled into a daily routine. It’s been incredible to see how these guys have responded, the energy they continue to bring, and the standard they’ve set. We have a lot of high hopes and goals for this season.
