Rain caused the game to be reduced to eight innings on Monday, but Charlie Morton pitched five and a third shutout innings and Austin Riley hit a three-run home run to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 9-0 victory.
In his season debut, 40-year-old Morton (1-0), the oldest starter in the majors this year, gave up three hits, walked two, and struck out six to send Chicago to its fourth defeat in a row.
“I felt good,” Morton remarked upon the commencement of his 17th season. “Today we used every tool available, and it’s enjoyable to do so whenever possible.”

Riley hit his first home run of the season, and Braves manager Brian Snitker remarked, “I don’t know how the heck he did that.” “This is the reason these guys score a hundred runs; they don’t leave many unaccounted for.”
After the eighth, the game was called off after 20 minutes.
On its season-opening road trip, Atlanta is off to a 3-1 start with at least one hit from each of its nine starts.
In his debut game with the team, Chicago starter Chris Flexen (0-1) gave up six hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings in addition to four runs allowed.
