Newly Signed QB kirk Cousins Angrily Terminate Contract With Falcons After Argument with Management
The new quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, Kirk Cousins, will not be playing with his previous Minnesota Vikings jersey number.
Kyle Pitts will retain the No. 8 at the Falcons instead. The 35-year-old cousin has agreed to a four-year deal worth $180 million (£141.4 million), including a signing bonus of $50 million (£39.3 million). He played for the Falcons for six years, until an Achilles injury ended his last season.
Cousins was rumored to be in talks with tight end Pitts to switch to the No. 8 jersey at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. However, it has now been verified that Cousins will don a new jersey for the Falcons in the 2024 NFL season.
The former Minnesota star, who had health issues the previous season, is expected to wear No. 18 in an effort to regain his prior form. With eight seasons prior to 2023 in which he completed at least twenty-five touchdown passes, Cousins has a solid reputation going into Georgia.
Soon to be 36, Cousins has discussed his reasons for leaving his previous team. “I think in Minnesota, it was trending over the last couple offseasons to being somewhat year-to-year,” he remarked after joining the team in Atlanta.
“After speaking with Atlanta, it seemed like this was a place where I could retire a Falcon provided I performed to the caliber I expect to.” I was genuinely delighted about that.
Cousins cited Falcons head coach Raheem Morris as a major factor in his decision to leave the Vikings. He had previously worked with Morris and stated of him, “Raheem, I was around in Washington for two years and was just so impressed with him as our DB coach.”
