Jarred Kelenic, the left fielder for the Atlanta Braves, has been the subject of a lot of conversation this spring. Although Kelenic has long been viewed as a potential star in Major League Baseball, his performance and injuries have prevented him from living up to the hype.
For the Wisconsin native, spring training hasn’t been the best; going into the last two weeks of camp, he was only 3-for-42 at the plate. Many fans were understandably worried about his performance, and when the Braves added Adam Duvall to their roster, it seemed like they would be as well.
But as we soon found out, even if the Braves had signed Duvall before Kelenic, they would have still wanted him. Duvall’s signing was motivated more by a desire to strengthen the squad than by concerns about Kelenic’s ability. That move strengthened Atlanta’s bench, which was a little shaky.
In an effort to boost Kelenic’s confidence, Kevin Seitzer and the Braves coaching staff are working with him to improve his swing. Atlanta is aware that in order for Kelenic to be the greatest version of himself both on and off the field, they must assist him in managing his strong emotional side.
For the 24-year-old outfielder, it appears that his unflinching faith in his ability to turn things around is beginning to pay dividends. Jarred had begun just striking the ball and maintaining firm contact with it.
It all came together during Wednesday’s game at CoolToday Park against the Blue Jays, and he began to see results. After working a 12-pitch at-bat and fouling off many balls, Kelenic was rewarded with a spectacular single up the middle.
This at-bat contributed to the Braves’ comeback, as they scored four runs to even the game. It was wonderful to witness him get an opportunity to aid in the team’s victory.
