‘Unbelievable’… Dan James was blown away by the £16 million star that Leeds United wanted to sign in January.

Page and Wales fans have long anticipated the Euro 2024 play-off, with Page’s side likely to defeat Finland. They accomplished this despite Teemu Pukki scoring his 40th goal for his country.

David Brooks scored first, just three minutes in. It was 2-0 when Neco Williams curled in a free kick, but Pukki made it 2-1. Brennan Johnson regained a two-goal advantage in the second half.

Given his form, James was surprised to be left out of the starting XI, instead watching Leeds teammates Connor Roberts, Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon, and Glen Kamara play ahead of him. He came on at 73.Roberts, Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon, and Glen Kamara play ahead of him. He came on at 73.

Then, 13 minutes later, James caught Finland defender Miro Tenho sleeping, snatching the ball and sprinting around the goalkeeper to put Wales ahead 4-1. A fantastic victory for Wales, who now face Poland.

James scored only his seventh goal for Wales in his 50th cap. Williams of Nottingham Forest is not far behind, with the £16 million man netting the best of the goals on Thursday night, his fourth for Wales.

Leeds were reported to be interested in signing the former Liverpool player in January. But Nuno Espirito Santo was keen to keep him, and that is how it turned out. That might change, considering Forest’s point deduction.

It’ll be fascinating to see if Leeds are still interested. But James is a great admirer, and he applauded Roberts on BBC Sport’s live coverage of the match afterward, calling his goal “unbelievable” on Thursday.

“It was brilliant, I think we got off to a great start, and then Neco (Williams) scored an unbelievable goal for the second,” Leeds star James remarked, speaking about the triumph and Leeds target Williams.

Without a question. Williams is a great player with Premier League experience and the ability to play in a variety of positions. He can play right-back, left-back, or wing-back on either side, as he does for Wales under Page.

Leeds could do with a left-back this summer. Sam Byram is out of contract, while Junior Firpo has failed to deliver for Leeds in the Premier League, with questions raised about his form even in the Championship.

The Whites have options at right back, although Jamie Shackleton is also out of contract. Archie Gray will presumably go to midfield, while Roberts is just on loan. So, signing a player like Williams would be critical.
