Canterbury Bulldogs star winger Josh Addo-Carr has been officially ruled out of the club’s Round 2 match against the Cronulla Sharks, after previously requesting to play.
Coach Cameron Ciraldo stated on Thursday morning, following the club’s captain’s run, that the winger will not line up with his teammates for the game.
Given he was only listed as a reserve in the team, the Bulldogs will field Blake Wilson and Connor Tracey on the wings in the Shire encounter, which is scheduled to begin at 6pm (AEDT) on Friday.
Addo-Carr was cleared of a severe injury that could have kept him out for up to two months, and the Bulldogs expect him to return between Rounds 3 and 5.
Despite this, director of football Phil Gould startled everyone by saying that star winger Josh Addo-Carr may be a late addition to the club’s Friday night encounter against the Cronulla Sharks.
“The coach said yesterday that he was asked to play, and he still believes he has a chance,” Gould revealed on his Six Tackles with Gus podcast.
“I believe they chose the team with the expectation that he would be out, but they have put him on the bench just in case.
“I would think it’s unusual, and it would be in his best interests, to take a week off to get it back to 100 percent, but he’s a bit like that, Foxx.
“He called the coach and said, ‘No, I’m still keen to go around.'” “It’s a short week; they’ll probably figure it out.”
If he did make an unexpected return, it would not be the first time the quick winger has done so ahead of schedule. Last year, he miraculously recovered from a syndesmosis injury and returned to the club three weeks ahead of schedule.
“‘Foxx’ is always in good spirits, and obviously he’s going to do his best to get out there on the weekend,” teammate Jacob Kiraz said during a press conference on Wednesday.
“He did it last year … shocked everyone when he came back after four or five weeks, and I know he’s going to put himself in the best position to play.”
