The Houston Texans prioritize linebackers when it comes to free agency, and one former first-round choice might end up at NRG Stadium. Linebacker Patrick Queen, a free agent, is interested in signing a long-term contract with the Texans this summer, according to ESPN. Queen was teammates with Texans cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. in Baton Rouge. Queen was a member of the LSU team that won the 2019 national title. Queen, a first-round selection in 2020, lost some step in his early Baltimore career. Following his arrival as defensive coordinator last offseason, former Tigers standout Mike Macdonald changed his ways.

Following the addition of All-Pro player Roquan Smith, Queen’s performance reached a higher plane. He had career highs in tackles (133), tackles for loss (10.5), and pressures (33) in the previous campaign and was selected to the second team of the All-Pro team. This offseason, the Texans hope to improve the linebacker room. The position occasionally proved to be a weak one, particularly the MIKE position, even with the rise of Christian Harris in his second season. Playing a variety of positions at the second level, Blake Cashman stepped up and finished with 106 stops, which led the squad.

This offseason, Houston decided not to apply the franchise tag to any defensive players. The Texans and Cashman have reportedly discussed a contract, but as the tampering period begins on March 11th, it doesn’t appear like a deal will be reached soon. Playing with a linebacker who stays in space a lot would help Queen. It would free him up to watch the quarterback and concentrate on becoming a signal-caller.
