Marcus Maye’s fate is almost determined with the newest Saints move ahead of 2024 NFL Free Agency

According to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, the New Orleans Saints plan to release safety Marcus Maye before the start of the league year.

“The #Saints have informed safety Marcus Maye that he will be released at the start of the league year, sources tell @BleacherReport.”

Maye was reportedly a candidate for release by the Saints earlier this week, according to Katherine Terrell of ESPN.

“Earlier this week, I heard that Maye was a probable release candidate. Availability definitely played a role; the Saints have other secondary alternatives that performed admirably this season.”

Prior to last season, the Saints turned $6.07 million of Maye’s 2023 salary into a signing bonus. The move freed up $4.86 million in cap space for the organization as they look to sign Derek Carr. Now the team has moved on from Maye completely.

The Saints are in serious salary cap shape this offseason, but with a series of changes, including a Cameron Jordan deal renegotiation, the NFC South team is slowly digging itself out.

Despite the move, the Saints were still more than $20 million over the salary ceiling for 2024, according to Spotrac, implying that additional moves were inevitable for the team, including Maye’s departure.

While the Saints are in awful financial shape at the end of February, they are not the worst in the league. The Saints are now ranked 29th in salary cap space, with the Los Angeles Chargers, Miami Dolphins, and Buffalo Bills all over the limit.
