LeBron James scored his 40 000th point on Saturday night, but Nikola Jokic chipped in with 35 points and 10 rebounds as the Denver Nuggets rallied late to defeat the Los Angeles Lakers 124-114.

With 3:49 left, Aaron Gordon made a 3-pointer to give Denver the lead again. The Nuggets then went on a 16-6 run to win their sixth straight game. Gordon finished with eighteen points, Jamal Murray scored twenty-four points and eleven assists, and Michael Porter Jr. made all five of his three-pointers to finish with twenty-five.

James achieved his most recent achievement with 26 points and nine assists, but the Lakers were unable to win three in a row. Anthony Davis contributed 17 points and 11 rebounds in addition to Rui Hachimura’s 23 points.

With 10:39 remaining in the second quarter, James whirled around Porter and drove the lane for a layup, expanding his lead as the league’s career scoring leader and became the first NBA player to reach 40,000 points.

At the next break, James was greeted with a standing ovation and a congrats from coach Darvin Ham as he approached the sidelines. The supporters, many of whom were sporting their Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, or St. Vincent–St. Mary High School jerseys, were ecstatic as James raised the ball over his head before and after the in-arena film presentation.
